JFE Engineering Corporation (President and CEO: Kazuyoshi Fukuda, Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo) and J&T Recycling Corporation (President and CEO: Hiroyuki Haseba, Headquarters: Yokohama City, Kanagawa Prefecture) commenced construction of a small demonstration facility for waste-to-chemical recycling technology. On October 31, 2024, a groundbreaking ceremony was held at the planned site within the J&T Recycling Corporation's Chiba Recycling Center on the grounds of JFE Steel Corporation's East Japan Works in Chiba City, Chiba Prefecture.

This facility is constructed to perform demonstration tests for the "Waste-to-Chemical technology development for Green Ethanol production by integration of Advanced Gasification and Biochemical Conversion technologies*1", which was adopted for the NEDO Green Innovation Fund Project, "Achieving Carbon Neutrality in Waste and Resource Circulation," in February of this year. This demonstration aims to establish optimized new waste gasification and purified synthesis gas production technology tailored for waste-to-chemical applications. Named the C-PhoeniX Process®*2, this technology is essential for waste-to-chemical recycling. It produces a stable supply of purified synthesis gas with hydrogen (H2) and carbon monoxide (CO) as primary components, which can be used as a raw material for plastics, SAF*3, and as hydrogen source. By developing this technology, our Group aims to contribute significantly to realizing waste-to-chemical recycling.

The demonstration facility is scheduled to begin operations in the second half of fiscal year 2025 and to complete testing in fiscal year 2026. Through this demonstration, our Group, as a leader in the waste treatment sector, is committed to developing and establishing a waste treatment system using innovative new technology to realize a decarbonized society, aiming to practical use it fully by fiscal year 2030.
