Order for Advanced Treatment Renewal Work at Talayan Sewage Treatment Plant Received from Maynilad in the Philippines

JFE Engineering Corporation

JFE Engineering Corporation (Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Kazuyoshi Fukuda) has received an order from Maynilad Water Services, Inc. (President and CEO: Mr. Ramoncito S. Fernandez; Head Office: Quezon City, Metro Manila; "Maynilad") for advanced treatment renewal work at the Talayan Sewage Treatment Plant.

This project involves upgrading the Talayan Sewage Treatment Plant*1, which was initially constructed and delivered by JFE Engineering in 2016, to comply with the newly enacted effluent standards in the Philippines (DAO-2021)*2. This work includes the enhancement of nitrogen and phosphorus removal capabilities. The upgrading will apply the "Modified Ludzack-Ettinger (MLE) process"*3, a proven technology already delivered to Maynilad. Our proposal, based on extensive process engineering expertise and in-depth knowledge of the existing facility, was highly evaluated and led to this order.
The scope of the contract encompasses process design, procurement, civil and electromechanical works, trial operation, and operational confirmation during actual operation. Completion and handover are scheduled for August 2027.

In the Philippines, rapid economic development and urbanization have created a pressing need for the development and modernization of sewage treatment facilities. We have already constructed more than 30 purification plants and sewage treatment plants in the country. We will continue to utilize the experience and know-how cultivated through these projects to contribute to water environment improvement in the Philippines and across Southeast Asia.

  • *2Effluent standards stipulated by an Administrative Order issued by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources of the Philippines.
  • *3A sewage treatment method that biologically removes nitrogen by recirculating part of the nitrification mixed liquor generated in the aerobic tank (nitrification tank) to the anoxic tank (denitrification tank). This technology, provided by JFE Engineering, continuously utilizes the different aerobic and anoxic conditions of nitrification and denitrification to release nitrogen components in wastewater into the atmosphere as nitrogen gas.
