Japan’s First Domestically Manufactured Monopile Foundation for Offshore Wind Power Completed
JFE Engineering Corporation
JFE Engineering Corporation (President and CEO: Kazuyoshi Fukuda; Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; the “Company”) has completed Japan’s first*1 domestically manufactured monopile foundation for offshore wind power at its Kasaoka Monopile Factory (Kasaoka City, Okayama Prefecture) and held a commemorative ceremony on August 26, 2026.
The ceremony was attended by numerous guests, including local government officials who have supported the factory since its establishment, as well as representatives from government agencies and project stakeholders.
The completed monopile is intended for the “Offshore Wind Power Project Off Oga City, Katagami City, and Akita City, Akita Prefecture,” being promoted by Oga Katagami Akita Offshore Green Energy LLC. (Representative Executive Officer: Atsushi Yuihara; Head Office: Akita City, Akita Prefecture)*2. This project is among the first large-scale offshore wind power initiatives in Japan scheduled to begin operations. The Company received an order from KAJIMA CORPORATION (President: Masafumi Kiryu; Head Office: Minato-ku, Tokyo), which handles on-site construction, to manufacture and transport the foundations.*3
The Kasaoka Monopile Factory, completed in March 2024, stands as Japan’s only*4 monopile manufacturing facility. Leveraging the Company’s processing and welding technologies for large-scale steel structures cultivated over more than 100 years, the factory is dedicated to the highly efficient production of high-quality monopiles. Furthermore, by utilizing “J-TerraPlate®,”*5 large-unit-weight heavy steel plates for wind power generation manufactured by JFE Steel Corporation, the Company significantly reduces welding work, achieving efficient production through the collective technological and manufacturing capabilities of the JFE Group.
The monopiles to be manufactured by the Company measure approximately 11 m in maximum diameter, 80 m in length, and weigh approximately 2,000 t each. Following the completion of the first unit, the Company is committed to the reliable manufacture and transport of all remaining monopiles, contributing to the project’s success.
Expanding offshore wind power deployment in Japan necessitates the development of a manufacturing base for foundation structures and a stable supply system. As Japan’s sole monopile manufacturer, the Company offers integrated services, from detailed design to manufacturing and transportation. By advancing domestic production of foundation structures for offshore wind power, we aim to strengthen the supply chain, thereby contributing to the growth of Japan’s offshore wind power industry and the realization of a carbon-neutral society.
