Awarded Contract for Inspection Services of Steel Bridge Section of Mumbai Trans Harbour Link in India

JFE Engineering Corporation (President: Kazumi Fukuda, Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo), East Nippon Expressway Company Limited (President: Mikio Yoshioka, Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, hereinafter "NEXCO East"), and CHODAI CO.,LTD (President: Masahiro Nomoto, Head Office: Chuo-ku, Tokyo, hereinafter "Chodai") announce that, through JFE Engineering's Indian subsidiary (JFEE Infra Private Limited), they will be awarded an inspection contract for the Orthotropic steel deck box girder bridge section of the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (hereinafter "the Bridge").

During the construction of the Road, JFE Engineering was awarded a contract in 2018 by Daewoo-Tata Projects Joint Venture, the main contractor, for the design, fabrication, and local transportation of steel deck box girders for Package 2^*1, which was successfully completed in November 2021.

The Orthotropic Steel Deck Structure adopted for the Bridge is a common structural form in Japan but was the first of its kind in India. Therefore, proper maintenance and management utilizing the extensive experience and technology cultivated in Japan is essential for ensuring its long-term structural integrity and safe operation.

JFE Engineering has been actively engaged in Operation & Maintenance (O&M) services in the overseas bridge sector. Together with NEXCO East and other partners, the company was commissioned by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT), Japan, to carry out the "FY2023 Project Formation Study on Infrastructure Operation and Maintenance (O&M) Overseas." Furthermore, in December 2024, the company participated in an Indian road PPP operation project^*2 and established a joint venture company in Mumbai, Maharashtra.

Against this backdrop, JFE Engineering and NEXCO East have been making proposals to Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), the owner of the bridge, regarding the importance of adequate inspection services, including the development of an inspection plan for the relevant structure. In addition, in September 2025, together with NEXCO East and Chodai, the companies participated in the "2nd Japan-India Road Technology Seminar" hosted by MLIT, where Japanese technologies related to "Maritime Road Construction and Maintenance Management" were introduced to MMRDA.

These achievements and proposals were highly evaluated, leading to the award of this contract.

Orthotropic steel deck box girders, the approximately 8 km in this project, employed on the Bridge offer advantages such as longer spans and shortened erection periods, and their effectiveness has been recognized by MMRDA and other Indian government agencies. For their proper maintenance, this project will leverage the design and fabrication expertise cultivated by JFE Engineering during construction, the inspection know-how for Orthotropic steel deck box girder bridges cultivated through the maintenance and management of steel deck bridges, including the Tokyo Wan Aqua-Line Expressway managed by NEXCO East, as well as Chodai's maintenance and management expertise for long-span bridges both in Japan and overseas. Furthermore, by transferring these technologies to JFE Engineering's Indian subsidiary (JFEE Infra Private Limited), the companies aim to establish a system capable of independently conducting inspection services within India in the future.

JFE Engineering positions this project as a model case, and will contribute to extending the service life of road infrastructure and ensuring its safe operation in India—a country experiencing remarkable economic growth—by applying the technologies and expertise in infrastructure development and maintenance cultivated in Japan.
