EPC Contract Executed for Japan’s First High-Pressure Hydrogen Pipeline in the Kawasaki Coastal Area

Japan Suiso Energy, Ltd. (Representative Director and President: Eiichi Harada; Head Office: Minato-ku, Tokyo; "JSE") and JFE Engineering Corporation (President and CEO: Kazuyoshi Fukuda; Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; "JFE Engineering") have executed an EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) *1 contract for Japan's first high-pressure hydrogen pipeline (the "Pipeline") in the Kawasaki Coastal Area (the "Coastal Area").
The contract was executed as part of the Liquefied Hydrogen Supply Chain Commercialization Demonstration ("Commercial Demonstration"). The Commercial Demonstration is being implemented under NEDO’s*2 Green Innovation Fund Program for Large-scale Hydrogen Supply Chain Establishment, with JSE serving as the project owner.Under the contract, JFE Engineering will undertake the integrated scope of design, procurement of equipment and materials, and construction for the Pipeline (total length: approximately 4 km), which will supply domestically produced hydrogen to JSE's Kawasaki LH2 Terminal*3 (the "Terminal") located in the Kawasaki Coastal Industrial Area.
The Pipeline is planned for use in the Commercial Demonstration under the GI Fund program and will supply domestically produced hydrogen to the Terminal.Following the successful completion of the Commercial Demonstration, the Pipeline will serve as critical infrastructure supporting the commercial supply of hydrogen to customers in the Coastal Area, transporting gaseous hydrogen derived from liquefied hydrogen imported from overseas and received at the Terminal. These customers are expected to utilize hydrogen to generate electricity and heat. Looking ahead to growth in hydrogen demand, the Pipeline is designed to accommodate hydrogen demand of up to one million tons per year, making it Japan's first high-pressure hydrogen pipeline designed for large-scale hydrogen transportation.
Leveraging its extensive track record, state-of-the-art technologies, and expertise as a leading pipeline construction company, JFE Engineering will execute the EPC work for the Pipeline. Through the construction of the Pipeline, the two companies will contribute to realizing a carbon-neutral society, starting from the Kawasaki Coastal Area and expanding across Japan.
