Investment and Participation in Waste-to-Energy Projects in India
—The First Japanese Investment by the Japanese Technology and Infrastructure company into India’s Rapidly Growing Waste Management Market—

JFE Engineering Corporation

JFE Engineering Corporation (President and CEO: Kazuyoshi Fukuda; Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; “JFE Engineering”) will enter the concession business in India by acquiring a 25% stake in two public-private-partnership projects for scientific waste treatment and power generation incorporated by Antony Lara Enviro Solutions Private Limited, a subsidiary of Antony Waste Handling Cell Limited, India’s leading Waste Management Company. (Chairman: Jose Jacob; Head Office: Maharashtra, India; “AWHCL”). Following Vietnam, India will become the second overseas market in which JFE Engineering develops waste-to-energy projects. This marks the first time*1 that a Japanese Technology and Infrastructure company has invested in and participated in a waste-to-energy project in India.

JFE Engineering and AWHCL, through the two project companies listed below, have signed 20-year waste management concession*2 agreements with the Regional Municipal Alliance within the State of Andhra Pradesh and the state-run Swachh Andhra Corporation.

1) Kadapa Renew Energy Pvt. Ltd.
2) Kurnool Renew Energy Pvt. Ltd.

Under the concession agreements, engineering and construction of two waste-to-energy plants will begin in 2026, with completion and commercial operation scheduled for 2028. Each facility will accept up to 1,000 tonnes per day of municipal solid waste, of which ~750 tonnes will be converted to green energy. The plants will each have a power output of ~15 MW, and the power generated will be sold to the Andhra Pradesh Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (APSPDCL), contributing to a stable regional power supply and improvements in the urban environment.

Engineering, supply and construction for both plants will be undertaken by JFE Engineering India Pvt. Ltd. (“JFEE India”), a wholly owned subsidiary of JFE Engineering. Since its establishment in 2011, JFEE India has accumulated extensive experience through participation in a wide range of domestic and overseas waste-to-energy projects for the JFE Engineering Group. Its EPC (engineering, procurement, and construction) services, where its proven technical capabilities have been leveraged, were highly evaluated, leading to the award of this project. JFEE India will continue to promote its business activities to secure contracts for waste-to-energy plant projects not only within India but also in overseas markets.

By combining AWHCL’s operational expertise and track record of over two and half decades in waste management in India with our technological strengths in the construction and operation of waste-to-energy facilities, we will work to execute these projects successfully.

Moving forward, the JFE Engineering Group will continue to promote planning, construction, and operation of businesses in this field both in Japan and overseas markets including India, contributing to the realization of a resource-circulating society by partnering with like-minded local developers.

  • *1 According to JFE Engineering research (April,2026)
  • *2 A concession involves a government or local authority retaining ownership of land or buildings while entrusting the financing, construction, operations & maintenance of public infrastructure to private companies for a fixed period.
