JFE Engineering Corporation (President: Kazumi Fukuda, Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo) is pleased to announce the completion of main parts of the "Project for the improvement of the Tema Motorway Roundabout (Phase 2)" in Ghana. The opening ceremony was held on December 2, 2024.
Ghana has been experiencing increasingly severe traffic congestion in its capital city Accra and major arterial roads due to economic growth. The Tema intersection, serving as a crucial junction where the Lagos-Abidjan Corridor (connecting West African coastal cities) meets the Eastern Corridor (leading inland from Tema Port), had become a significant bottleneck, particularly with expected increases in cargo traffic through Tema International Port.
The Project, undertaken by our company, encompasses a comprehensive scope including steel bridge fabrication and erection, pier foundation work, road construction, paving, traffic signals, and lighting installations. We have leveraged our extensive experience from similar projects, such as the Ulaanbaatar Bridge in Mongolia and the Kelani Bridge in Sri Lanka. We successfully executed the project without disrupting existing traffic through meticulous construction management. We will continue to prioritize safety, quality assurance, and adherence to construction schedules as we complete the remaining auxiliary works.
The latest Japanese civil engineering technologies have been incorporated into the design of this elevated bridge. Specifically, at the intersection crossing section, by adopting a rigid-frame structure that integrates portal-type steel piers with Steel Bridge*1 with Reduced Number of I-Girders*2, the road surface height was reduced by approximately 2m, resulting in shorter approach road lengths (about 50m on each side). In the approach sections, reinforced earth wall*3 method capable of withstanding earth pressure up to approximately 10m in height was adopted. By preventing the earth pressure from acting on the abutment, both economic efficiency and constructability were achieved.
(Outside our company's scope)
Additionally, the following Japanese technologies from the JFE Group were integrated into this project. These technologies help reduce maintenance costs, extend the structure's service life, and minimize environmental impact.
・Steel Plate by JFE Steel for extended coating life (JFE Steel's "EXPAL®" ) that significantly extends the repainting interval
・Steel-concrete composite deck (Our company's "River Deck" ) with excellent durability and constructability
・JFE Metal Products' liner plates for optimized caisson pile construction that minimize excavation area
Our company will continue to provide high-quality infrastructure utilizing Japanese technologies in ODA projects, contributing to the alleviation of traffic congestion and the development of transportation infrastructure in African countries, including Ghana.
- *1 A bridge structure where the steel girder superstructure is rigidly connected to the pier substructure
- *2 A bridge structure where the span between floor slab supports is increased and the number of main and cross girders is reduced by using high-strength composite floor slabs
- *3 A retaining wall structure that reinforces vertical or near-vertical walls by inserting reinforcement materials (such as steel bars with plates or strip-shaped steel materials) into the soil
