JFE Engineering Corporation
JFE Engineering Corporation (President: Hajime Oshita; head office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo) has been awarded from Taiwan's state-owned oil and gas company, CPC Corporation, Taiwan (hereinafter, "CPC"), the contract of engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning support (EPCC, hereinafter the "Project") for the construction of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) receiving facility.
Currently, Taiwan is actively promoting energy conversion as part of its sustainable energy policy. Under its 2025 energy transition policy, Taiwan has set the target of increasing the ratio of power generation fueled by natural gas to 50% of total power generation, which makes the expansion of natural gas infrastructure an urgent issue.
The Project involves the construction of an LNG receiving facility 1.2 km offshore from the location of the Third LNG Receiving Terminal that CPC is currently building in the Guantang Industrial Area in Taoyuan City. The facilities to be constructed by our company, which will be installed on a concrete caisson jetty, consist of the LNG unloading facility, seawater intake facility, and auxiliary facilities such as cryogenic piping. In addition, to mitigate the risk from suspension of the work under severe weather conditions at the site, such as strong winds and high ocean waves, and to shorten the construction period, the technology of modular construction* will be applied for LNG receiving facility for the first time in Taiwan.
Our company has a track record of constructing receiving terminals dating back to the 1970s when LNG was first introduced in Japan, and in recent years, we have completed the same modular construction as in the Project for the Toyama Shinko LNG terminal (completed in 2018) and the Niihama LNG terminal (completed in 2021). We also constructed Taiwan's first underground LNG tank (completed in 1990) at the Yung An LNG terminal. Our rich experiences and extensive capabilities for construction of LNG terminal were highly evaluated and led to the award of the Contract.
JFE Engineering will continue to contribute to the stable supply of energy and a low-carbon society around the world through the technologies it has developed in the construction of various LNG receiving terminals and other energy plants.
- * Modular construction refers to a construction process in which the components including steel structure, piping, electrical instrumentation, and other equipment are fabricated off site. After completing pipe pressure testing, cleaning, painting, and cold insulation, these components are transported to the construction site for installation.
