JFE Engineering Announces Capital Participation into a Subsidiary of Berjaya Corporation Bhd, A Malaysian Diversified Consumer Group - First Overseas Hazardous Waste Treatment Project of JFE Engineering Group -

30 July 2021
JFE Engineering Corporation
J&T Recycling Corporation
JFE Engineering (M) Sdn. Bhd.

J&T Recycling Corporation (President: Tetsuo Tsuyuguchi, Head Office: Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture; hereinafter J&T Recycling) and JFE Engineering (M) Sdn. Bhd. (Managing Director: Shu Suehiro, Head Office: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; hereinafter, JFEE Malaysia), which are group companies of JFE Engineering Corporation (President and CEO: Hajime Oshita, Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo), will invest into Berjaya Alam Murni Sdn. Bhd. ( Representative /Director: Koh Chee Yong, Head Office: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; hereinafter, BAM), which was established by Berjaya Corporation Berhad, to develop a Sustainable Scheduled Waste Treatment Center (SSWTC) project in Malaysia.

BAM was established in July 2019 to develop and operate SSWTC with the following components: thermal treatment incineration, cement solidification and secure landfill for safe treatment and disposal of hazardous waste liquids/solids, waste oils, medical wastes and various other types of industrial hazardous waste in Malaysia. The thermal treatment incineration plant of SSWTC will be constructed by an EPC consortium of JFEE Malaysia and Tsukishima Engineering Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. After the construction, J&T Recycling will be responsible for operation of the thermal treatment incineration plant.
The facilities will begin operation with the secure landfill from July 2022, and followed by the operation of the thermal treatment incineration plant in July of 2023.

Capital participation in this project was realized upon a stringent evaluation by Berjaya Corporation on JFE Engineering's established track record in waste treatment plants around the world, and particularly the actual result of construction by JFEE Malaysia in the State of Sarawak, Malaysia, together with the operating expertise and technologies developed by J&T Recycling over many years throughout various incineration plants in Japan.

Although Malaysia has experienced various cases of environmental pollution incidences originating from industrial hazardous wastes in the past, the participation of the JFE Engineering Group of companies into BAM is expected to accelerate the development of effective and appropriate treatment plants for hazardous waste management in Malaysia.

Based on its extensive record of waste treatment plant construction and operation to date, the JFE Engineering Group will continue to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and a resource recycling society through project planning and operation in the waste treatment field, both in Japan and overseas.
