JFE Engineering Corporation
Standardkessel Baumgarte GmbH

Standardkessel Baumgarte GmbH (hereinafter, SBG), a subsidiary of JFE Engineering Corporation (President and CEO: Hajime Oshita, Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo), recently received an order for the design, construction and commissioning of a Waste-to-Energy (WtE) power plant in Dundee City, Scotland in the United Kingdom from MVV Environment Baldovie Ltd. as a full-turnkey project.

As in the past, about 50% of waste is simply being buried in landfills in the United Kingdom. In recent years, however, a shortage of disposal sites has become an urgent problem due to environmental policies in the EU and the UK. In addition to this background, construction of WtE plants is also being promoted as an environmental solution that enables effective utilization of the waste heat produced by waste incineration.

The order received by SBG is for an Energy-from-Waste Combined Heat and Power Facility (EfW CHP) which is being planned by MVV Environment Baldovie Ltd., a Special Purpose Entity (SPE) established by the major German utility company MVV Energie AG.
The plant will treat 329 tons of waste per day with one incinerator, and will generate electricity equivalent to the consumption of about 20,000 ordinary households. The steam produced by the facility will be supplied to a neighboring Michelin Tyre factory.

SBG has constructed 115 waste power plants to date, mainly in Europe. In addition to this extensive record, the company was also highly evaluated for its boiler cleaning technology, which makes it possible to keep a high level of boiler thermal efficiency, and for maintaining the WtE plant*1 in Plymouth, England at a high operation capacity, leading to the recent order.

In the future, the JFE Engineering Group will continue to contribute to the creation of a recycling society by promoting proposals for WtE plants in countries throughout the world based on the total capabilities of the Group.

  • *1 WtE plant operated by MVV Environment Devonport Ltd., which was constructed by SBG in 2015.
