JFE Engineering Corporation

JFE Engineering Corporation (President: Hajime Oshita, Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo) has formed a joint venture (JV) with Shimizu Corporation (President: Kazuyuki Inoue, Head Office: Chuo-ku, Tokyo) and TOA Corporation (President: Takeshi Hayakawa, Head Office: Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo) in the Republic of Cote d'Ivoire, West Africa. The group has been awarded "Improvement Works of Three Intersections in Abidjan" being supported by Japanese ODA loan. This is the first construction project that the Company has undertaken in the country.

Abidjan is the largest economic city in the Republic of Cote d'Ivoire and serves as a hub for economic activities in West Africa. With the traffic volume increasing rapidly along with the progress of urbanization, traffic congestion caused by aged and underdeveloped road infrastructure has become a chronic problem. Therefore, the transportation infrastructure needs to be improved.

The goal of this project is to alleviate traffic congestion in Abidjan and improve traffic convenience and logistics by constructing flyovers at three intersections on Boulevard Mitterrand, an arterial road crossing the city, creating multi-level intersections. The project aims to increase the traffic volume through each intersection by approximately 30%, significantly shortening the transit time through the section. In addition, steel box girder bridges, which can be easily assembled at the sites, will be used to minimize the impact on existing traffic already suffering from congestion and to carry out the project in a short construction period on narrow sites in an urban area.

At the 8th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 8) held in August this year, the Japanese government declared its intention to support sustainable development in Africa as "a partner growing together." Under such a circumstance, in the Republic of Cote d'Ivoire, a major member of the West African Growth Ring Corridors (WAGRIC), we will make full use of our technical capabilities to complete the improvement work at the Abidjan three intersections, thereby contributing to the further economic development of the country and the West African region.
