JFE Engineering Corporation (President and CEO: Hajime Oshita, Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo), Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (President and Representative Director: Takao Tanaka, Head Office: Chuo-ku, Tokyo) and TODA CORPORATION(President and Representative Director: Masanori Imai, Head Office: Chuo-ku, Tokyo) received an order valued at approximately ¥20 billion for the "New Bridge Construction Project over the Kelani River - Package 1, Steel Bridge Section" from the Road Development Authority (RDA) of Sri Lanka based on joint venture organized by the three companies. The agreement was concluded on November 2, 2017.
With the increasing volume of traffic accompanying the economic growth of Sri Lanka, congestion in Colombo, the country's largest city, is becoming more serious by the day. In particular, the New Kenali Bridge over the Kenali River in the northern part of the city is the point where National Road A1 and the main highway to the international airport merge, and has become a traffic bottleneck where chronic congestion occurs.
In this project, a viaduct connected to a new bridge to be constructed adjoining the existing "New Kenali Bridge" will be constructed. By eliminating traffic congestion, the new viaduct will smooth logistics and travel by citizens, and will contribute to the further economic development of the country. A Special Terms for Economic Partnership (STEP*1) yen loan will be applied.
The outstanding technology of the three companies, including steel bridge piers, curved steel box girders, composite decks, etc., were adopted for this project as it is necessary to carry out the difficult construction work in a narrow space in an urban area in a short time so as to minimize the impact on existing traffic. The order was the result of a high evaluation of the record of the three members of the joint venture in applying these technologies and their actual results of construction in urban areas.
The three member companies of this joint venture will contribute to the further economic development of Sri Lanka by utilizing their technological capabilities and experience in Sri Lanka to the fullest possible extent in order to ensure successful completion of this key infrastructure project.
- *1 STEP is an abbreviation of Special Terms for Economic Partnership. Under this program, Japan is promoting "Aid with a visible face" through technology transfer to developing countries, utilizing Japan's outstanding technologies and know-how.
