Start of Joint Demonstration Test of Purified Drinking Water Supply with Yangon City

20 May 2016
JFE Engineering Corporation

JFE Engineering Corporation (Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Hisanori Kanou) and Yangon City (Mayor: U Maung Maung Soe) began a joint demonstration test for purified drinking water supply utilizing a water source and land provided by Yangon City.

In Yangon City, coverage of water supply system still has achieved only 35%. Therefore, in order to securing a stable supply of purified drinking water as urgent demands, construction of water treatment plants and improvement of the water pipeline network are rapidly progressing.

Under these circumstances, JFE Engineering Corporation has set up a pilot plant for purified drinking water with the capacity of 24 m3 per day in Dala Township of Yangon City and began a demonstration test for 1 year. The plant operates 24 hours a day and uses well water as its water source. In this test, JFE Engineering Corporation will confirm the stability of treated water quality which will be affected by seasonal fluctuation of raw water quality, and optimized plant operation with the aim of producing high quality purified drinking water on the same level as in Japan.

JFE Engineering has begun construction of steel bridges and waste to energy plants in Yangon, and its subsidiary, J&M Steel Solutions (a joint venture with the national government of Myanmar), is manufacturing steel structural products, thereby contributing to development of infrastructure in that country. This proven track record and the high evaluation by Yangon City of JFE Engineering's proposal, which was based on its wealth of experience in the construction of water treatment plants in Japan, lead to the current joint demonstration test.

In the future, JFE Engineering Corporation will continue to propose the optimum solutions satisfying the needs of clients in the various nations of Southeast Asia where improvement of water infrastructure is an urgent issue, beginning with Myanmar.
