Paper Sludge Treatment and Waste-to-Energy Plant
Completed in Malaysia

Tokyo, June 6, 2003 – JFE Engineering Corporation announced today that it completed on March 31 this year installation of a paper sludge treatment and waste-to-energy plant for a paper factory run by Genting Sanyen Industrial Paper Sdn. Bhd. in the state of Selangor, Malyasia. In November 2000, JFE was contracted to supply and supervise installation of plant facilities on consignment from the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) under Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI).

Genting Sanyen and the Malaysian government celebrated the successful commissioning of the plant in a ceremony held in Kuala Langat on June 5. The event was attended by Malaysia’s Energy, Communications and Multimedia Minister, Datuk Amar Leo Moggie, other government officials and guests from Japan, including Hiroyuki Ochiai, Director of International Cooperation Center, NEDO.

The waste-to-energy plant project is part of the Japanese government’s Green Aid Plan, which aims to support the self-help efforts of developing countries in the Asia-Pacific region in conjunction with environmental protection and effective energy utilization. Established as a NEDO international model project to maximize efficiency in energy consumption, it is the first to be implemented in Malaysia, under an agreement between NEDO and the Malaysian government signed on October 30, 2000.

Recognizing JFE’s technical expertise and past achievements in this field, NEDO consigned the company to design, supply and supervise installation of core facilities, including a 110-ton-per-day fluidized-bed incinerator and equipment to recover and utilize waste heat from paper sludge treatment at Genting Sanyen’s paper factory.

Today, Malaysia and other Asian countries are seriously addressing environmental issues in the face of their burgeoning economic growth. Drawing on its accumulated technical expertise in waste disposal and resource recycling, such as stoker incinerators, high-temperature gasifying and melting shaft furnaces, as well as Thermoselect gas cracking furnaces, JFE will continue to provide comprehensive solutions that meet a wide range of challenges, helping Asian nations create a better environment.
